Could You Have Diabetes?

Often, people have diabetes and don't know it. The symptoms can come on slowly, so you may not notice them. Take this quiz to see if you have any of the warning signs of diabetes:

  • Are you thirsty all the time?

  • Are you hungry all the time?

  • Have you lost weight?

  • Do you need to go to the bathroom a lot?

  • Do you have cuts that heal slowly?

  • Do your hands or feet feel tingly?

  • Do you have blurred vision?

  • Have you been very tired?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may have diabetes. Do not ignore the symptoms. See your doctor. This is the only way to know if you have diabetes. Not getting care can lead to serious health problems, such as losing a leg and even death.

What if I have diabetes?

There is no cure for diabetes. But you and your doctor can control it. Take these steps to stay healthy:

  1. Visit a doctor for regular checkups. Your doctor can help you make lifestyle changes, such as losing weight.

  2. Visit an eye doctor at least once a year. This can help prevent blindness.

  3. Eat healthy, low-fat foods, such as grains, beans, vegetables, and fruits.

  4. Exercise. This can help you control your weight. Talk with your doctor about some good exercise choices for you.

  5. If your doctor has prescribed medicine or insulin for you, never miss a dose.

  6. If you smoke, quit.

  7. Check your feet every day for cuts and sores. Don't trim calluses or corns. See your doctor for foot care.

It may not be easy to make these lifestyle changes, but don't give up. Get the help you need.
