Prevent Childrens’ Teeth Trouble and Pain

When children have problems with their teeth, they might have trouble eating, talking, and learning. Teeth problems can cause infections and pain. Try to stop teeth trouble before it starts:

  • Take your child to the dentist within six months after the first tooth comes or by your child's first birthday.

  • Care for your baby’s mouth. After feedings, wipe the gums with a damp, clean cloth. Don’t put a child to bed with a bottle.

  • Teach children to brush. Start brushing when your child gets his or her first tooth. The dentist can also show you and your child how to brush and floss.

  • Limit juice and sweets. They may have a lot of sugar. Instead, give children fresh fruit, yogurt, or crunchy vegetables such as carrots.

If you need help finding a dentist, please visit Keystone Mercy Health Plan’s provider directory and go to “Find a Dentist”. You can also call Member Services at 1-800-521-6860. Please go to the dental section on our Web site to learn more about your dental care.
