Exercise: It's Key to Losing Weight and Staying Trim

Want to lose weight and keep it off? Health experts say that to do this, you must exercise. That doesn't mean you have to do difficult or boring exercises. The trick is to pick an exercise routine that works for you so that you will stick with it.

Do something you enjoy. You are more likely to stay with your routine if it is fun. Many people like walking. You can walk in different settings, such as at a mall or a park, so that you don't get bored. Bring a friend and talk while you walk. Or you could dance or do aerobics—just pick something that you like.

Start slowly. You may decide to exercise for 10 minutes every morning. Soon you can build up to 20 minutes, then 30 minutes.

Take breaks. It's OK to take a day off. Just don't get into a rut. Get right back into your routine!

Keep track of your exercise on a calendar. Seeing your progress will make you feel proud and make you want to keep up the great work.

Don't let yourself get down. It takes time to lose weight. It may take a while before you notice a difference. Stick with it, and you'll be glad you did.

You may need to change your diet too. Your health care provider, fitness specialist or dietitian can help you plan a healthy diet.
