Answers to HPV Questions

HPV is a common STD. Here are answers to some questions about HPV.

Can HPV be prevented?

A new HPV vaccine called Gardasil protects against four types of HPV. Of these, two cause 70 percent of all cervical cancers. The other two cause 90 percent of genital warts. The vaccine is approved for females ages 9 to 26. Condoms offer the best way to protect against all STDs.

What are the symptoms of HPV?

Warts can be found on the penis and around the anus in men. In women, they can be found on the vulva or around the anus.

How is HPV treated?

The virus can’t be cured. Using a cream, freezing, using a laser, or having surgery can remove the warts.

If you are are having sex, see your doctor for checkups.
