Help Prevent Premature Birth

A full-term baby is born at 40 weeks. If a baby is born before 37 weeks, the baby’s life can be at risk. Premature babies can have brain damage. They can also have trouble breathing, seeing or hearing.

You can do many things to help prevent premature birth:

  • If you could be pregnant, visit a doctor or clinic right away. Go to all pregnancy checkups.

  • If you smoke, use street drugs, or drink alcohol, quit. You can get help.

  • Tell your doctor about any medicines or herbs you take.

  • If you have pain or burning when you urinate, tell your doctor. You could have a urinary tract infection.

  • Ask your doctor about signs of early labor. Get medical help right away if you notice signs.

  • Take care of yourself. Rest when you can. Eat healthy foods. Reduce stress.

Keystone Mercy Health Plan has a special program called WeeCare for women who are pregnant or have just had their baby. Call 1-800-521-6867 to join WeeCare today!
